Like every other intern during the month of July, I have just been trying to stay afloat & look like I know what I’m doing. Before the dreaded July 1 date came, I made sure I got stocked up on essentials so that I’d be more prepared for anything! Often times my days can be unpredictable & I’m never sure of what my hours will look like. So I got a nice big bag and stocked it with things I thought would be especially useful. Yes.. I’m that crazy person who has everything she needs in her purse. But after a month and a half it’s proved to be useful! If you’re wondering, I am an internal medicine preliminary intern, and I spend most of my time working on wards, and here is my survival kit so far…
First of all, I have a Longchamps large tote in black. I clip my keys to the strap with a carabiner, and never take them off; my purse goes with me everywhere, and I never lose my keys. (I get really scatter brained when I work a lot, y’all!)
I also have my wallet, obviously. And the cutest Kate Spade pencil pouch stocked with PLENTY of pens. (Damn you, chronic pen stealers who lurk around the hospital!) I especially love these quad colored pens because I color code my patient notes.
I keep a small Sephora makeup bag I got in a promo stocked full of various lip stuff. It’s unnecessary and I know it. But I can’t help myself! In it, I have: a vaseline lip therapy tin, Beach Babe chapstick from Tone It Up, a random clear gloss, Nyx Soft Matte lip cream in Istanbul, Nyx Intense Butter Gloss in Peanut Brittle, Kylie Cosmetics Metal Matte Lipstick in Heir, Kylie Cosmetics matte liquid lipstick in Candy K & Mary Jo K, and MAC lipstick in Velvet Teddy. (All these are linked below..) I also have some roll on perfume by Tory Burch, some Sephora Blotting papers, and a bunch of Excedrin Migraine (because headaches at work are the WORST).
I also carry a ton of snacks with me. I always have a Lenny & Larry’s Complete Cookie on me, because a lot of time there are cupcakes or cookies lying around, and I can just grab one of those instead. I also have protein bars, like Wilde snacks bars! Or Perfect Bars, but I like to keep those in my lunchbox so they stay cold. I also keep some trail mix in there.
As far as random crap goes, I also have a pair of headphones (non-tangle of course, which I got at the TIU Retreat!), a little notebook in case I need to keep logs of things (I haven’t had to so far?), some hand sanitizer, ACLS cards (because what if someone codes and I’m the only doctor in the elevator??? these things keep me up at night), some Advil, and Soap & Glory hand cream. Last but not least, I have a mini emergency kit which contains: earring backs, deodorant towlette, double sided tape, stain remover, emory board, clear nail polish, breath freshener, clear elastics, lip balm, nail polish remover, dental floss, hair spray, pain reliever, a mending kit, a safety pin, and… a bandaid.
See? Told you I’m ready for anything! What do you keep in your work bag, just in case?
